IPS Compounds an Alternative to Basaljel - Aluminum Carbonate
Basaljel, a popular antacid manufactured by Wyeth-Ayerst, has been recently discontinued. This product utilizes aluminum carbonate to neutralize acid, and is reported to be 33% more effective than aluminum hydroxide alone. In addition, some pet owners have reported better palatability than aluminum hydroxide, which aids in dosing their pets.
Aluminum carbonate is a compound that combines aluminum hydroxide gel and calcium carbonate. This 500mg combination provides the same acid neutralizing effect as 608mg of aluminum hydroxide, as reported by the manufacturer's documentation. IPS can compound doses equivalent to the old Basaljel formulation. The cost of this compound is $45.00 per 100 capsules. It is important to note that due to the quantity of powder in this dose, the capsule size is a #000, which is too large for most small pets. Owners will need to open the capsules and mix the powder with some food to provide the required dose.
IPS also continues to compound capsules and solutions of aluminum hydroxide. For more information on doses and pricing for these drugs, call the Compounding Specialists at IPS at 800-328-7060.
